Crowned NME’s Breakthrough Band in 2011 and a rising live profile, The ABC Club kick off 2012 with the follow up to debut single, their new White Lies EP.
With Thieving Magpie hailed by Rough Trade as ‘one of the most exciting of 2011’s debuts’ and Artrocker praising it as ‘a luminous piece of artrock.. Exhilarating but intimate’, the White Lies EP is a formidable follow-up. Opening with the eponymous track; a bolting charge of a song, driven along by taut, racing guitar hooks circling beneath Klievens’ distinctively languid drawl. A live favourite, it sees the band take up where ‘Thieving Magpie’ left off, all snapping rhythms and thrillingly heady energy.
Beginning with a flurry of morse-code guitar, ‘Grandfather Clock’ pulses with an ebb and flow that drives at the very longing at the heart of Klievens’ lyrics. ‘Scattered Light’ is a drum-driven gem, nonchalant with one heck of a chorus. Meanwhile, the EP’s final track sees the band in a more reflective mood as the short but bittersweet ‘Whitby’ winds its way to a close.
‘Zandra looks like the DNA clone of Julie Christie and Mick Jagger while the groups mixture of speed disco and rainy day melancholy is a fine thing indeed. The songs are as excited as the slamming of school gates, shooting along with scuzz and romance.’ (Artrocker)
‘Artful indie full of creaky disco beats and big blooming choruses’ (NME) ‘Rather brilliant’ (This Is Fake DIY)
